Drew flinched when he spotted Mother. How did she always manage to show up at the most inopportune times? Lord, give me the words to say...or not say.
âWhat is going on here, Andrew? Have you been fighting?â Motherâs jaw dropped open and her arms went limp at her sides.
âWe had a slight altercation. Thereâs no need to concern yourself.â
âFight was more like it,â Hiram Martin interjected. âYou shouldâve seen them, scrapping like a bunch of alley cats.â He waved his hand at the overturned boxes and cans. âI expect you to be paying for the damages, Drew.â
âDonât worry, Hiram. Weâll settle our accounts. Allow me to help with the cleanup.â Drew grabbed a broom and swept up the broken glass.
Jules joined him, holding the dustpan when he had need of it. Thankfully sheâd gotten those tears to stop. They worked in quiet, side by side, putting the store back in order.
He chose to ignore the steady stream of conversation between Mother and Hiram, concerning the brawl.
When he swept the last bit of dirt into the dustpan Jules held, he noticed her trembling hands. He examined her pale face. Drew guided her to the back corner of the store. âJules, sweetheart, are you hurt?â He traced his finger along the curve of her cheek. âYouâre a bit peaked. Perhaps we shouldnât have come out just yet. Shall we come another time to do our shopping? It appears you could use a good rest.â
Her spine stiffened and her chin jutted out. âNo, Iâm fine.â
âThatâs my girl.â He smiled when her gaze darted to meet his. âHow about we start collecting the things on your list?â
Drew led her to the dry goods section. A rack on the side caught his attention. âJules, this is something new. Hiram has ready-made clothes. They werenât here the last time I came in.â
Julesâs fingers ran along the sleeve of a green dress hanging from a hook. Not allowing her to argue, he draped it in front of her. âIt seems like it would fit. Hiram, do you have somewhere my wife could try on a dress?â
The balding man bustled toward them, motioning to a curtained doorway. âGo on through there, missy, and try it on. Iâll see to it nobody goes in that room.â He headed back to the counter.
âAre you sure?â Her gaze went to Drew. She held the dress to her chest as if it were made of fine china.
âAbsolutely. Let me see when you have it on though.â He winked at her.
âOnly if it fits me.â Her cheeks took on a rosy glow before she thrust through the curtain.
âI cannot believe you and your wife would be tussling like common outlaws.â Mother murmured behind him.
He pivoted toward her.
âI expected it of Julia, but certainly not my son. This was not how you were raised. This marriage is damaging your reputation. We need to find a way to end it.â

Jules held her breath behind the curtain, listening to her mother-in-law spew words of hatred. Did Drew really wish he hadnât married her? Her body quivered at the thought he might have regrets.
